Creating a blog or wiki is the easy part!

The challenge is in creating authentic and meaningful learning experiences that invite students to participate, collaborate and engage within these sorts of learning environments. It is also important that clear guidelines and protocols are in place for the students to follow- teachers need to model how to interact within this space in ways that support and promote quality learning.

Teachers need to maintain momentum in the blog or wiki – making sure that the page is not static, to maintain student interest.

The collaborative nature of these environments provides all students with a voice and an audience. Quality posting and commenting needs to be explicitly  taught. It is also important to address the importance of on-line etiquette – responsible and ethical behaviours. These are things we can not assume the students are aware of and we need to clarify teacher expectations when working within these collaborative learning environments.

The following blog is an example from a school within our Diocese – the teacher has includes blog rules that the students developed  http://year6sms.wordpress.com/

The following is a blog from a school in Victoria, the teachers have designed clear guidelines on how to post quality comments

http://2kmand2kj.global2.vic.edu.au/ This is a great example and well worth a look.

Blogs and Wikis – Powerful Writing Tools

Powerful thing about blogging – it is connected writing, writing for a purpose, clear intention -writing for an audience – it also supports literacy development, and the three R’s READING – RESEARCHING _ REPRESENTING

Reading/researching information sources- Representing sharing and their knowledge in a variety of creative ways  and Reflecting on their learnings -students processing their thoughts through comments and feedback
the ability to post comments  and to both give and receive  feedback- promotes self-assessment and reflection- students can reflect on their work and think of ways they could possibly improve.
Promotes metacognition- encourages students to THINK- not just in general terms but to reflect on their own thoughts and to  be able to articulate them.

Here is a collection of some Web 2.0 tools that you can embed into blog posts.

(these tools give you an HTML embed code which you can paste into the HTML version of the post/page editor or into a text box widget)

VOKI

Students will love to create an avatar to share information, advertise a product or maybe rap out a social message. The options for classroom application are endless plus a lot of fun!!!

Vokis are lots of fun to create!

PHOTO PEACH

PhotoPeach is a great way to create a slideshow or quiz using your photos. Very quick and easy to use. You can add music and text to your slideshow (you have to pay to upload your own music and to be able to download the movie and get an embed code – Only $3.00 a month!). Well worth it because it also allows you to create a quiz – here is one I created on Animals – this took approx 3 minutes!

FOTOBABBLE

Fotobabble allows you to upload a photo and record a narration to “create your own talking photo.”

Here is one I created – this took me only 2 minutes to create!
This Photo Talks! – Click to hear it.
